If your child is struggling with solving word problems, ask them the following questions.

1) Have they encountered a similar word problem before? 

2) Have they read the question carefully to identify the key words and question requirement?

3) Do they have a strategy to solve the word problem?

Most students struggle with problem solving because they may not have been exposed to enough word problems in school as the textbooks and workbooks mainly focuses on the key topics and concepts but students have not learnt the skills to problem solve.

Your child may have read through the question briefly but missed out on the key phrases. Or they have done everything right but did not answer to the question requirement.
